SLC Shows Gratitude to Fire Department

On the evening of January 8th 2010 high school sophomore Ryan Turner and his girlfriend Rachel Novak were injured when the snowmobile they were riding struck a tree.  Turner, who is the grandson of SLC CUSTOM PACKAGING’s founder Robin Bugenske, sustained the worse injuries including skull fractures, bleeding on the brain, and a partially collapsed lung.  Thanks to the quick response of the Macedonia Fire Department, he was stabilized and flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.  After three weeks in the hospital and six months of out-patient therapy, Turner has made a full recovery.  In a show of support and gratitude to the city’s safety forces, SLC donated funds to the fire department to cover the complete cost toward the purchase of a Kawasaki Mule rescue vehicle.  The vehicle can be used by first responders to quickly access areas that conventional equipment cannot, due to off-road conditions or difficult terrain.  Fire Chief Tim Black nicknamed the vehicle the “Ryano” in Turner’s honor

Going Green

Making new paper products from scrap paper saves a significant amount of energy, water, and other natural resources.  Every month SLC recycles over 4 tons of paper.  According to the EPA, every ton of recycled paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity - enough energy to power the average American home for five months.  Furthermore, recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74 percent less air pollution and uses 50 percent less water.  Additionally, producing recycled paper requires about 60 percent of the energy used to make paper from virgin wood pulp.
